AN elderly woman who suffered a serious head injury after a bus was forced to brake due to a van pulling in front of it has died.

At around 1.10pm yesterday, Saturday, February 22, an elderly woman had been on an Arriva bus on Borough Road when it is believed a white van stopped suddenly in front of the bus.

This caused the bus driver to brake.

St Helens Star:

Yesterday, the Star spoke to a man who was on the bus and came to the aid of the woman.

The man, Tommy Bradley, a support worker, said: "I was on the 89 bus sat at the back.

St Helens Star:

"The bus had gone past Aldi and was travelling up that road towards The Eccleston Arms.

"A white van had stopped suddenly and it forced the bus driver to suddenly brake and a lady aged 70s or early 80s ended up falling but she smacked her head on the metal pole that people use for handrails.

"I went straight down and started with CPR and she was unresponsive.

St Helens Star:

"But the paramedics came and was able to get her breathing on her own.

"It was proper scary. Police have taken my details and I've given them a statement.

"I really do hope she pulls through as she was in a bad way and the other passengers were quite distressed about it."
