A man on the bus has recalled the incident, where he claims an elderly passenger fell after a collision.

St Helens Star:

The man, Tommy Bradley, a support worker, said: "I was on the 89 bus sat at the back.

"The bus had gone past Aldi and was traveling up that road towards The Eccleston Arms.

St Helens Star:

"This man in a white van had stopped suddenly and it forced the bus driver to suddenly brake and a lady aged 70s or early 80s ended up falling but she smacked her head on the metal pole that people use for handrails.

"I went straight down and started with CPR and she was unresponsive.

St Helens Star:

"But the paramedics came and was able to get her breathing on her own.

"It was proper scary. Police have taken my details and I've given them a statement.

"I really do hope she pulls through as she was in a bad way and the other passengers were quite distressed about it."

Major traffic congestion surrounds the accident, with Westfield Street going into Borough Road closed and Westfield Street into the town centre traffic also affected.
