AN INQUEST into the death of a man who suffered a gunshot wound has been opened.

Police were called to an address on Freemantle Avenue, Thatto Heath at around 3.45pm on Friday, January 17 where they found a man had "sustained a gunshot wound".

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

However, police confirmed the man had sadly since died.

The man has been identified as Paul Cheshire, 52.

A spokeswoman said: "The death is not believed to be suspicious and police are supporting the man’s family at this time.

"A post mortem will be carried out to establish the cause of death and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

A spokeswoman for Sefton, Knowsley and St Helens Coroner's Office confirmed that an inquest into Mr Cheshire's death had been opened on Wednesday, February 12.

The inquest was adjourned until a later date.
