Farmers and churchgoers came together last weekend to enjoy another successful Plough Sunday at St. John the Baptist in Whittington.

The service, which was given by Sarah Bullock, Bishop of Shrewsbury, blessed a plough ahead of the new farming season, was followed by a supper at Oswestry Rugby Club.

Organiser Mark Jones thanked all those for coming and was delighted they were able to raise money for charity.

"It's a traditional service as it's a quiet time of the year," said Mr Jones, who is also an Oswestry town councillor.

"They used to bless the plough to get it ready for the new season.

"It's a service for the plough and all the farmers who get provide the food for us.

"We take the plough down the aisle and then we bless it. The young farmers help us with that and then we go back to Oswestry Rugby Club where we have a supper and raise money.

"This year, we were able to raise £535 for the church and £164 for the Midlands Air Ambulance. We've had a few bouts of illness this year but it was still well-attended and it's a nice service to do in January.

"I would like to thank all those who attended and the Bishop for a lovely sermon."
