MORE than 2,000 runners are expected to hit the streets for the 10th GPW Recruitment St Helens 10k with remaining places strictly limited.

Organisers say there are few remaining vacancies left for the annual big run as participants see if they can become a 'North Road Survivor'.

This year's run takes place on Sunday, March 1 with the event to mark the 10th time the race has been held.

The event has developed over the past decade from its beginnings on Birchley Street car park as 684 runners took part.

The 10k is a testament to the late Steve Prescott MBE who wanted to improve the health and well-being of people within the borough.

The GPW Recruitment St Helens 10k not only raises vital funds for the Steve Prescott Foundation but also sees participants run in aid of an array of local and national charities.

Gary Ward, from GPW Recruitment, said: "This year we have runners from great local causes Violet Grace, Isabella Rose, Hope Centre, Willowbrook, Tunzas Pride but also from further a field including Daniel Hodges who will be running in a Rhino outfit for Save the Rhino.

"We welcome all runners from all charities to join in and raise as much money as possible to make a difference. We also love to see a great fancy dress costume"

SPF general manager Martin Blondel, on behalf of the 10k organising committee, added: "The 10k run takes literally 12 months of planning when the cleaning up from the last race finishes planning for next years starts.

"We want to give the runners the best experience possible, with the use of the Totally Wicked stadium we have a start and finish point second to none in the country."

He added: "We have used TDL Event Timing Services for the past 6 years because they are the best. Not many 10k runs in the country have three timing splits at the 3k, 5k, 8k markers that allow the runners and their families the ability to check on their progress on the fantastic App they provide. There are a lot of people to thank for allowing us the privilege of staging this great 10k, none more so than St Helens Council and St Helens RLFC."

There are still some places left but they are now strictly limited. To secure a place, go to sthelens10k.com
