A HERITAGE society has put together a book to raise funds for a new base – after being left homeless.

Rainford Heritage Society was located at Inglenook Farm in Rainford.

However, due to the venue and businesses at the village farm closing, the society has been left without a home.

The team of historians have already sourced a new venue, a barn at Bridge Farm at Rainford Junction, which they believe could become a permanent heritage centre.

But they need help to make that happen.

Rainford Heritage Society member Ray Waring has produced True Stories & Memories of Rainford – and all the profits will go towards the proposed venture.

The proposed new venue

The book tells of St Helens’ Witchfinder, Rainford Chapel, New Non-Conformist’s Chapel, Corpus Christi and how it began, The vases, Jim Ed: A conqueror of darkness, Rainford’s milestones, Baby bought for 4s and more.

Discussing the book and fundraising, Ray told the Star: “We are now in an advanced stage with the planning process. It is a huge project for a local society to take on board but when finished would be a major tourist attraction for St Helens and Merseyside.

“We will be applying for a Heritage Lottery Grant but the society itself will have to contribute. The cost of the project is about £450,000 which would mean an investment in the region of £45,000, ie 10 per cent of the full cost.

“We have been raising funds by holding quizzes, barn dances and entertainment evenings over the last five years but are still some way short.

“We are now in the position of having to store thousands of artefacts until the barn is converted and we are also under pressure to raise a large amount of money urgently.

“We would like to appeal to Star readers to help us achieve what would be a great attraction for our town, by purchasing this new book. The cost of the book is £11, including postage and packing.

“We would also be extremely grateful to businesses or individuals who would be willing to make a donation towards the new centre.”
