THE ST Helens community and emergency staff have raised just under £2,000 in less than 24 hours to help a mum-of-four and her family after she was diagnosed with a stage four glioblastoma brain tumour.

Yesterday, the Star published an article explaining how the life of Cara Castrogiovanni-Lorenzo, from Clock Face, was turned upside in February 2019 when she suffered a seizure and was rushed into hospital.

She spent most of last year undergoing numerous tests to control the seizures and help her to manage day to day tasks.

In November 2019 a biopsy was taken and the results showed she is suffering from a stage four glioblastoma tumour.

This kind of tumour is fast growing and likely to spread.

Cara, 42, is undergoing aggressive treatment and her husband Dan Lorenzo, a firefighter in St Helens for more than 20 years, is now unable to work while he cares for his wife and children, Nathan 15, Lucia 9, Jonathan, 8, Thomas, 6.

St Helens Star:

In desperation to help their friend and her family, Cara's friends Suzanne Sixsmith, who works in the NHS, and Evonne Green have set up a fundraising page to help the family.

Suzanne, 42, said: "This is a 999 family, Dan has served St Helens for more than 20 years and now his wife and children need your help."

Since the article was published, well wishes and support from the borough and beyond have flooded in and donations have crept up to £3,838 in less than 24 hours.

Responding to the news Suzanne said: "Today The St Helens Star newspaper published an article about Cara and Dan. The response so far has been overwhelming.

"Our town is amazing. We look after each other.

"The response from Dan's 999 brothers and sisters goes to prove that our first responders are the very best of us. £3,000 and counting.

"We will never stop saying thank you. You are all just amazing."

On Facebook, Star readers also sent messages of support.

Suzanne Gaskell said: "Known Cara for a while now. A truly beautiful soul. Even my son calls her 'A very beautiful lady'

"Neither she nor her family deserve this.

"Sending all my love and support, but it doesn’t seem enough."
