FOR a couple who love to run, any old proposal wouldn’t do. So St Helens 10k winner Matt Crehan waited until the New Year Park Run to ask girlfriend Jade to marry him.

In front of more than 600 runners gathered at Victoria Park's band stand on New Year's Day, Matt, 28, got down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend, 26-year-old Jade Smith.

Matt, who owns running shop Made to Run, said: “I was preparing for it for about a month, asking her dad’s permission and stuff and my mum and her family knew so they could all be there.

“It was nerve-wracking though asking Jade to marry me in front of 600 people.

"But we met at the park run, and these people are like our extended family so it also felt right as well.

St Helens Star:

“It felt amazing for her to say yes and to hear everyone be happy for us.

“She always said that if I was to ask her I’d have to make it special

"We both love running so what could be more special than asking her between two park runs?”

Commenting on the proposal via Instagram Jade said: “What better place could there be than the place we first met and a place that is such a big part of our lives.

“So proud to be the fiancée of Matt Crehan.”
