WITH New Year being the time for resolutions, many will turn their attention to starting the year off on a health kick.

One idea is to go for walks, so we've compiled a list of routes you could take today to start 2020 off with a bang.

1. The Sankey Valley route, a circular walk which covers six and a quarter miles, starts and finishes on Bradley Road, Earlestown.

It takes in many historic sites in the Sankey Valley, soon coming out on a scenic stretch of the historic Sankey Canal.

Following the old towpath under Stephensons Viaduct, it also takes in the remains of Newton Lock and then follows part of the old disused canal which remains in water through to Winwick.

The walk also takes in a quiet country lane to Bradley Old Hall, featuring a moat and listed 15th Century gatehouse before a track and path lead back to the canal and picnic area before the return to Earlestown station or car park.

2. Meanwhile, the Billinge Hill route covers six and three quarter miles following paths across farmland featuring stone buildings dating from the 18th century, including St Aidan’s Church.

Following on to the highest point in Merseyside at 587 feet, Billinge Hill has extensive views reaching to the Welsh hills, Lancashire, and eastwards over Winter Hill and Greater Manchester.

The descent of the hill follows more farmland paths and tracks to Carr Mill Dam follows, where a variety of farmland birds and waterfowl can be seen.

The route also goes above a wooded ravine following The Goyt before more farm land paths leads to the Masons Arms, a pub dating back to 1779.

3. Beat the bounds, yes in Summer local history enthusiast Ste Lingard incorporates the Anglo-Saxon tradition of ‘Breaking the Bounds’ to the St Helens calendar.

The 42.5 mile walk around the borough, takes in picturesque scenery such as Billinge Hill, Sidings Lane Nature Reserve – and the Nine Arches Bridge by Sankey Canal.

4. Walk locally, there is nothing wrong with a small stroll around Taylor Park, Victoria Park Sherdley Park or even woodland near your home.
