The Labour Party have held Stretford and Urmston in the General Election 2019.

After 69.4pc of voters turned out across the constituency and 155 spoilt ballot papers were discounted, Kate Green has been re-elected to represent the area with a 16,417 vote lead.

The results for the seat in full are:

Ms Kate Green (Labour Party): 30,195

Mr Mussadak Mirza (Conservative Party): 13,778

Dr Anna Fryer (Liberal Democrats Party): 2,969

Ms Jane Leicester (Green Party): 1,357

Mr Gary Powell (Brexit Party): 1,768

The Conservatives came second to Ms Green, although she still enjoys a comfortable majority in the constituency.

Green Party candidate Jane Leicester, who is Trafford Green Party’s leader, also missed out on the seat.

Meanwhile the Brexit Party’s representative Gary Powell gained more votes than the Green Party in the borough that voted to remain back in 2016.

Ms Green is a popular MP who has represented the seat since 2010 before her the area was safely Labour’s under her colleague Beverley Hughes.

Ahead of the area going to the polls, it was widely expected that Ms Green would hold the seat.

Now, Ms Green can comfortably return to her post in Westminster where she has represented Stretford and Urmston for nine years.

Muted about her own win, she said: “I wish I could say that it has been a good night for my party across the country, but I am devastated to see good colleagues lose their seats. I fear for the direction our country will now take.

“As a member of British Parliament, it feels a more onerous responsibility than ever.”

Runner-up Mussadak Mirza, of the Conservative Party, was bouyant.

He added: “It’s been a good night for my party. Thank you.”
