ALL Mersey Ferry services are cancelled today after the Pier Head landing stage was damaged by a barge.

A multi-agency investigation has been launched after a Skylift 23 Jack-up barge had broke free from its moorings at 12 Quays Terminal in Birkenhead at around 10.10pm yesterday (Tuesday, December 10).

It is believed that the barge was drifting into the River Mersey before causing damage to the Pier Head landing stage.

The barge was then towed by tugboats and secured alongside Langton Dock.

Merseytravel say that they are working to fix the landing stage and get the ferries up and running today.

A Merseytravel spokesperson said: “The Pier Head landing stage was damaged following an incident last night and as a result the Mersey Ferries are currently not running.

“We are investigating the circumstances around the incident and our engineers are on site assessing the damage.

"We will do everything we can to get the Mersey Ferries services running again and initial indications are that this will be today.”
