A CANCER survivor has made an video book based on popular children's book We Are Going on a Bear Hunt to encourage other people to check for lumps.

Sarah Vaughan, from Eccleston, thought she was good at checking her breasts for lumps, so she was shocked when she was diagnosed with breast cancer on December 7, 2017. After five months of gruelling treatment, including chemotherapy, a mastectomy and reconstruction, she received the amazing news in June 2018 that she is now cancer free.

During her fight with the disease, the 45-year-old set up a Facebook page called @firstofthemonthcheckforalump to encourage women and men to check themselves on the first of every month. She has posted pictures using fruit to highlight what signs to check for, and the page has garnered 1,400 followers.

However, to mark two years since her diagnosis, the mum-of-four decided to pull together a video book called We Are Going on a Boob Hunt, based on children’s book We Are Going on a Bear Hunt to raise more awareness of checking for lumps.

Sarah 'at her worst' during treatment

She said: "I was reading it to my five-year-old son Damian and thought it would be good to follow the pace of it and write a parody but to raise awareness of checking for lumps.

"It took a few months to sort it out, and I did the illustrations myself. My family asked whose voice it was, but it's mine!

"On December 8 it's two years since my initial diagnosis, and I wanted to show that yes the word cancer is really scary, but with early detection, there is so much they can do to treat cancer.

"I want to use what happened to me to help others, and also put some humour into it.

"It's about making it memorable and repetitive so it gets into people's heads and they will remember to check and realise how easy it really is.

"If one person remembers and checks themselves and gets checked out earlier then that's what matters.

"The response so far has been amazing."
