Recognise the resounding phrase, 'Space – the final frontier?' The bold declaration, which heralded many an intergalactic adventure for a much-loved TV sci-fi series, seems to have also struck a chord with the engineers and designers at Vauxhall.

For the latest iteration of the company’s big-selling Insignia has interior space by the planet-load.

Its proportions are aided by the introduction of a new modular platform which makes an already ample product even larger, with a wheelbase that’s 92mm longer and an overall car length of almost 4.9m.

The extra size increases cabin space – particularly in the rear – and such growth has been achieved while slimming down the popular motor. For a fresh approach to build materials has resulted in a weight saving of 59kg on the previous model.

Size, and the spaciousness it brings, is a key element in the Insignia experience.

Slip inside and the car at once feels comfortable, roomy and ready to cosset driver and passengers while tackling the longest journeys.

Attention to detail is also apparent inside the Insignia. Clean lines, tactile surfaces and strong craftsmanship provide a feeling of elegance and lightness.

The cockpit is fully aligned to the driver, who sits 3cm lower than previously. The centre console provides additional support, the instruments face the driver and all controls can easily be reached.

The frameless touchscreen of the infotainment system has a sophisticated and technical charm, and the new system is more intuitive to use than before.

The instrument panel features subtly sculptured surfaces, with a distinct driver orientation and a wide horizontal layout.

And there’s a whole swathe of tasty equipment including a fully integrated sat nav system,  7-inch colour touchscreen, AM/FM/DAB digital radio, Bluetooth audio streaming and mobile phone portal, connectivity suite, USB audio connection, seven speakers (five front, two rear), dual-zone electronic climate control, multi-function trip computer, cruise control with speed limiter, heated sports steering wheel with audio/phone/cruise controls and a steering column adjustable for reach and rake, sports pedals, twin rear USB sockets and18in alloy wheels (our car had 20in high-gloss black alloys as an optional extra).

Comfort is enhanced by heated front seats, with the outer-rear seats heated too.

There is hi-tech LED matrix lighting with 32 LED lenses which enhance long-range visibility with spotlight and curve illumination. And on the safety front, features include lane-keep assist and automatic emergency braking.

The car is a real looker, with elegant lines and large coupé style, bringing class-leading aerodynamics while the performance is keen, our Grand Sport SRi VX-Line Nav 2.0 giving 0-60mph in 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 139mph (manufacturer’s figures) from its168bhp, two-litre, turbo-charged diesel engine.

The power is laid down sweetly by a smooth automatic gearbox. Fuel consumption is: combined low 42.8mpg; combined high 46.3mpg; with 147g/km CO2 (also manufacturer’s figures).

The Insignia is a winner in the space race, a big, dynamic-looking car that delivers a rewarding driving experience. Price: £35,370 (inc options).
