UNIONS will stage protests against Black Friday and Cyber Monday outside Amazon’s Omega warehouse next week.

GMB has organised demos at the online retail giant’s bases in Bolton and Warrington, taking place today and Monday respectively.

Protestors are expected outside the Amazon’s fulfilment centre on Orion Boulevard, Burtonwood from around 5.30pm on Monday, December 2.

The union is staging the protests "in anger at the appalling treatment of workers" – which it claims includes employees breaking bones and being knocked unconscious.

Amazon oopened a warehouse in Haydock this autumn.

GMB says its investigations have revealed that more than 600 ambulances were called to Amazon warehouses across the UK over a three-year period, while members have reported staff urinating in plastic bottles instead of going to the toilet in order to meet strict targets.

Eight-seven per cent of workers responding to a union survey claimed they suffered constant joint pain.

National officer Mick Rix said: “GMB is staging protests at various Amazon sites across the north west on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

“The conditions our members work under at various Amazon sites are appalling.

“Workers are breaking bones, being knocked unconscious and being taken away in ambulances.

“Amazon has spent a fortune on fluffy adverts saying what a great place it is to work – why not spend the money making their warehouses less dangerous places to work?

“Amazon workers want chief executive Jeff Bezos to know they are people, not robots.

“It’s about time Mr Bezos showed empathy with the very people that have helped build his vast empire and make sure it is not a Black Friday for Amazon workers.”
