ST HELENS town centre is set to become a kaleidoscope of fancy dress costumes this New Year's Eve night.

Every pub and bar in the town centre is taking part in the inaugural 'New Year's Eve Fancy Dress Party'

Each venue will have its own themed entertainment, with fancy dress competitions in most as it is hoped the idea will become an annual event in St Helens.

"It tends to be quiet for bars on New Year's Eve as people tend to go home," said one of the organisers Matty Williams, general manager at The Sefton Arms pub on Baldwin Street.

"So we thought why not get together as a town, similar to what they do in Wigan on Boxing Day?

"We phoned the council and they said they'd give us their backing.

"Hope fully it will be a successful night that will grow and grow."

Matty added: "It can only benefit the town and the people who want somewhere to go at New Year, the businesses and the fancy dress shops.

"If it can be as good as West Fest, if it can replicate that it can be good for the town.

"Every bar and pub in the town centre will be doing their own things, the staff will be in fancy dress. At the Sefton we'll be holding a fancy dress competition.

"I just want it to be a good night for the town."
