WE sat down with David van der Burg, Green Party candidate for St Helens North, and asked him some quick-fire questions.

Here's what he had to say.

Education?

I was brought up in North Yorkshire in a village outside York. I went to schools in and around York until I was 17. I went to the University of Manchester and I stayed there until 2000. I graduated with a degree in French and Linguistics which I’ve ever used!

Profession?

I ended up becoming a lawyer and live and work in Haydock and I am a borough councillor.

What is the first car you ever bought?

A Nissan Micra.

Where did you last go on holiday?

We had a little train trip round Europe in April following a band. We got a train from here to France, then Belgium and Holland and all the way back again.

What was the last thing you ate?

I had a pastrami and tomato sandwich for lunch

When was the last time you cried?

At a gig, Murder Capital last month. There was a very emotional song about the suicide of one of their friends, it always gets me.

What’s your favourite St Helens restaurant?

Colours. They do an exceptional feast.

What is your favourite pub in the town?

Turk’s Head. Plenty of different choices, if I’m going out that would be my choice.

What would be your last ever meal?

I’m diabetic, so I’m not supposed to eat much in the way of carbs so something very carb-heavy, lots of sushi, lots of donuts and ice-cream.

Where do you do your food shopping?

Aldi

Who is your favourite Saints player?

Historically Prekky.

What is your favourite movie?

I don’t go to the cinema a lot. Probably something gut-wrenching like Betty Blue or something really silly say like Team America.

What is your favourite TV series?

The Wire

What is your favourite book?

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

Who is your favourite actor?

I like John Malkovich.

What types of music are you listening to right now?

All sorts. I mentioned Murder Capital earlier, Idles and Fontaines DC are my favourites at the moment. I like everything from Abba to death metal. The only thing I don’t really like is traditional Jazz but I like lots of everything music-wise.

Who would play you in the movie of your life?

An actor with a big beard! It’s only a year old but I’m known for it. Bob Hoskins

Have you got any tattoos?

No. I had a bet with a friend about 30 years ago that one of us would have a tattoo and whoever did it first would get five quid off the other. I don’t think he has and I haven’t. One day!

What is the best gift you have ever received?

I have everything I need so I only get little gifts. Probably a dishwasher! When me and my wife moved into our place in Haydock 19 years ago my parents had seen the state of the flat we lived in before and they bought us a dishwasher. It’s still going 19 years later and it saves from drowning in washing up.

If you had one superpower, what would it be?

To remove all carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. It’s a trite answer but it is true.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever had?

I don’t think I’ve ever taken any advice. I kind of do what I want and see what happens and no one has advised me otherwise so far!
