THE sign of a good unsung hero is someone who thinks they don’t deserve the award at all despite putting their all into helping others.

That is very much the case for Donna Milow, 45, who works in the NHS but also spends every Friday night organising a youth club at Sutton Village Church for children aged five to 11.

Despite suffering an injury in 2016, leading to loss of function in her right hand and causing her severe pain, Donna’s commitment has never waned.

On winning her award she said: “I’ve never won anything in my entire life, then I go and win this, I just can’t believe it.

“I’ve been doing this now for 30 years, but I love doing it.

“This is the first Friday I’ve not been there for ages, I’m just made up with this, I’m going to go in next Friday and show the award to all the kids and volunteers.

“I’m just so shocked, the other nominees are so good with all they do, I just didn’t expect to win.”

At this point in the interview Donna’s very excited daughter Olivia, who had been working at the Totally Wicked Stadium waiting on, ran and gave her mum a huge hug. The pair started laughing and saying “I can’t believe it, as if!”

The happy mum-of-two, added: “I feel really honoured by this, I can’t believe it I just do it for the kids, I don’t do it on my own I just coordinate stuff, but I’m honoured none the less.”

Other nominees who were highly commended in the Unsung Hero category were: Ian Roberts and #StHelensLitterHeroes who help clean up our streets and Steve Thornton for establishing suicide prevention charity and ‘brotherhood’ HIMvisible.
