The girl pushed the man away and both girls ran off in the direction of Holme Road, Eccleston.

The girl was not seriously injured but was left shaken by her ordeal.

The man was described as around 6ft tall, of large build and wearing a distinctive blue jacket and gloves and had his face partially covered.

An investigation is underway.

Detective Chief Inspector Craig Sumner said: “This was clearly a frightening incident for both girls. Thankfully the girl who was grabbed wasn’t hurt and did the right thing by running away and reporting the incident.

“We are currently making enquiries in the local area and checking CCTV.

“I would also ask for anyone who was walking through the park last night who saw a man fitting the description to contact us as they may be able to assist our investigation.”
