A 10-YEAR-OLD girl who saw the homeless and wanted to help them has partnered up with Tesco to offer food and hygiene supplies to Teardrops Homeless Charity.

Katie Wootton from Eccleston is a kind-hearted little girl often thinking of others and giving her own money to the homeless.

But with recent bad weather Katie started asking her mum Lucie how the homeless manage, brush their teeth and where their food comes from.

That's when Lucie decided to take Katie to Teardrops to see the amazing work carried out there.

Lucie, 49, said: "Katie is very compassionate for others and asked lots of questions on how the homeless manage.

"After going to Teardrops and her asking questions I told her to write a list of all the things a homeless person could want and then she wanted to go and get them.

"We went to meet with the manager at Tesco St Helens who agreed to not only give her food and hygiene items for Teardrops, but to also have a basket with Katie's Project written on it, where shoppers can donate items as they like.

"Katie went in herself and proposed what she wanted to do, she is a shy child, but this is important to her and the manager said he was very impressed.

"We are hoping to work with other local shops too to help the homeless and those in need."

St Julie's Primary pupil Katie has also been in to Smyth's toys in St Helens who have donated toys for children this Christmas who are living in hostels with their mums.

Lucie added: "I've always been proud of Katie, she's my miracle child, but I'm especially proud of how kind and thoughtful she is for others and how much she wants to do t help at such a young age."

Shauni Ward, co-founder of Teardrops on Crab Street, said: "Katie is an inspirational young girl and an advocate for other young people.

"Katie's determination and enthusiasm to raise awareness as well as helping make a difference in other people's lives is truly phenomenal.

"Recognition for this young girl should not go unnoticed, therefore we want to make Katie our young ambassador for 2019/2020."
