Highways England closed two lanes on the M6 southbound between Junction 23 at Haydock and Junction 24 at Ashton-in-Makerfield.

This was due to "a defect in the road surface".

Maintenance crews and traffic officers attended with congestion building from around 1.30pm.

All lanes have been reopened, Highways England has since confirmed.
