A MASKED gang burst into a supermarket and stole money from a cash machine during a smash and grab raid.

Three men entered through the back of the Aldi store on Vulcan Park Way in Newton-le-Willows at around 11pm on Thursday, setting the alarm off.

They managed to get money out of the cash point before leaving through the rear of the property.

The gang wore dark clothing, facial coverings and gloves.

A loud bang was also reported by residents.

However, police would not comment whether explosives were used to break open the cash machine.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "Officers are currently in the area this morning working with the staff at Aldi as well as carrying out various house to house enquiries, CCTV analysis and forensic tests."
