A TORRENTIAL weekend has caused flooding chaos across the borough.

Roads have been flooded and fields waterlogged after days of rain and gloomy skies.

Fields and play areas in Moss Bank Park, usually packed with families at the weekend, were turned into lakes as they were battered with wind and relentless rain.

In nearby Barrow Bridge, a typically quiet Dean Brook turned into a raging river as water levels rose, dangerously close to houses in Barrow Bridge Road.

In recent weeks, Mort Lane has been struggling to stay open with the intermittent downpours. But this weekend saw the key route from Tyldesley to Bolton become submerged entirely, forcing the road to be closed.

Paula Stout, who lives in Tyldesley, said: “It has been quite manic over the weekend with some cars getting stuck.

"Others have had to turn around near the flood which is causing road chaos."

Yesterday, drivers were using one lane of the road, where the water had drained away slightly, to get past the flooding at their own risk.

Mrs Stout added: "The road is still flooded but one side seems passable now. It’s the worst it has been for some years.”

There are no signs of the heavy showers stopping in this week's weather forecasts. Outbreaks of heavy rain will continue to hit the region with condition becoming increasingly unsettled, according to the Met Office. Towards the end of the week, Bolton residents have been advised to brace themselves as there is a risk of heavy rain and strong winds.
