YOUR article on St Helens Council’s attempts to secure funds to improve safety at the junction of Chapel Lane and the Linkway, following the death of Dan Klepper, filled me with dismay.
When an elderly lady died at the same spot three years ago, I wrote to the council Highways Department to ask if the trees and shrubs on this corner could be removed, to give pedestrians the chance of seeing any car coming off the Linkway from about 50 yards away.
At present they have to cross with the view to the right being about 15 yards, too little to avoid contact with speeding oncoming vehicles.
Instead “Pedestrian Crossing” signs were inserted on the Linkway, which have been reinforced since the young man’s death last year, together with 40 mph signs. Whilst I appreciate my suggestion is not as safe as a footbridge, the haggling about finance will go on and people will still be in mortal danger crossing at that spot.
