THERE is always plenty to do in Bolton in the back to school season. Here's five things you should check out this week.

COMMISSIONED to coincide with the Tour de France, Beryl is a play about trailblazing cyclist Beryl Brown written by award-winning Bolton actor, writer, and former Octagon Youth Theatre member Maxine Peake, The story of one of the UK’s greatest unsung sporting heroes will be energetically brought to life in the intimate setting of Bolton’s Library Theatre with Vicky Binns playing Brown, the wife, mother and northern lass, who became a record-breaking world champion and a cycling legend. Widely recognised as one of the greatest female cyclists of all time, Burton blazed an early trail for the likes of Lizzie Armitstead to excel at the sport on the international stage in winning the women’s world road race championship in both 1960 and 1967.

Beryl runs from Thursday September 19 to Saturday October 19. Tickets £29 - £14 (Concessions £2 off).

A BRAND new singing group is launching tomorrow for children ages 7 and up.

Singing teacher Jamie Taylor is inviting kids to come along to the Vocalize group singing class from 6.15pm to 7.15pm at Barrow Bridge Church.

SMITHILLS Hall tells 800 years of stories and ghost hunters are hoping to uncover them on Friday.

The hall will host a ghost tour from 9pm to 2am to ring in the darker nights and the spooky season almost here. The group will be exploring all areas of the building with ghost hunting gadgets and hearing the history of the estate, which dates back to 1335. JOIN the PDSA for a pet first aid workshop on Tuesday.

The event will run from 9:30am-2:30pm at Bolton Environmental Resource Centre on Bury Road.

Participants will learn how to spot when something is wrong with your pet and how to prevent some emergencies altogether.

Attendees are asked to leave their pets at home to practice on models, but encouraged to bring their own refreshments.

The course will cost £5 per person, and places must be booked in advance. Sign-up information can be found on the PDSA website.

MARCO Players presents the brilliant comedy from Simon Williams ­— Nobody’s Perfect.

The plot features boring statistician Leonard Loftus trying to further his writing career.
