THE story of Prescot high street restaurant Pinion, from its crowdfunding start to its top chef, will be the subject of a Channel 4 documentary, Thursday, September 19.

The hour-long feature, will follow chef Gary Usher and talk to him about why he set his sights on bringing top food to Prescot, a town centre long neglected but undergoing a transformation ahead of the creation of the Shakespeare North theatre.

The shop before its transformation

Following a crowdfunding campaign, which raised £50k in less than an 24-hours, Gary opened his fifth venue Pinion (named as a nod to the town’s watch making history) in September 2018 on Eccleston Street in a former BetFred shop.

The ‘Rebel chef’, says that his cooking is for a new generation, adding: “Amazing food for anyone and everyone – no frills attached.”

He has achieved this and creating venues under the name Elite Bistros across the North West, through crowdfunding, which sees individuals or organisations invest in projects in return for a potential profit or reward.

Speaking to the Star, Gary said: “This is amazing for Prescot, I’m not overly into the idea of cameras following me round but for me this is about helping to put Prescot and Pinion on the map.

“Opening Pinion in Prescot was 100 per cent the right decision, opening and running a restaurant is hard work and can be a challenge, but that’s regardless of where it is.

“The community here and the other fantastic independent businesses here make it the perfect place to be.

“It will be amazing to watch the documentary and celebrate Prescot and all we have achieved with Prescot this year.

“I’m absolutely chuffed to be honest.”

The bistro is also celebrating after the bistro joined his other six venues in the latest edition of The Good Food Guide, which lists the best food venues across the UK.

The Rebel Chef: My Restaurant Revolution will air on Thursday, September 19 Channel 4 at 10pm.
