In 2009 during his postman days, Mat featured in the Star after he tackled a kitchen fire while on his rounds as he collected an unsung hero award from television presenter Christine Bleakley.

Mat more recently went to travel round the world and discovered a passion for yoga, often organising retreats for people.

Mat leaves behind family including mum Sylvia, dad Walter and brother Mark.

"Mat had always had mental health problems for many years. He never hid the fact and did a lot of work for the homeless and did a lot of charity work," said second cousin Jo Crowe.

"He just wanted to help everyone and mental health was his passion to remove the stigma attached to it. He had it and knew what it was like.

"He would give you the last pound in his pocket. He had this presence, he would walk into a room and fill it with joy.

"He would be the clown to make everyone be happy, he was just that type of guy," added Jo, 24.

A family tribute added: "He helped so many people over the years supporting them with their darkest times with mental health.

"He also supported by giving his time and his own finical contribute to tackle homelessness."

Following Mat's passing, the family are seeking donations to St Helens Mind, who helped Mat on numerous occasions.
