POLICE are investigating after remnants of a cannabis farm were found after a fire at a former Labour Club.

Firefighters were called to a rubbish fire at the disused Moss Bank Labour Club on Queensway this morning (Tuesday, August 27).

Crews spent nearly two hours at the scene after arriving there shortly after 5.30am.

They used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire in the building.

Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident after what were described as "small remnants of a cannabis farm" were among the items on fire.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service were called to a disused building in St Helens following a fire this morning, Tuesday, August 27.

"At around 6am, MFRS were called Moss Bank Labour Club, Queensway to reports of a small rubbish fire, which is believed to have included some small remnants of a cannabis farm. Enquiries are ongoing.

A spokeswoman for the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service added: "Firefighters were called to Moss Bank Labour Club on Tuesday, August 27.

"Crews were alerted at 5.29am and on scene at 5.39am. Two fire engines attended.

"On arrival crews found a small quantity of rubbish on fire in the property. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a high pressure hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

"Crews left the scene at 7.43am."
