A FIRST of its kind event has welcomed four very special two humped guests from the central Asian steppes to Llangollen.

More than 1,000 people flocked to the Llandyn Hall Farm fields to see the spectacle of four bactrian camels racing as part of the town’s Family Fun Day.

The spectacle, which is a popular sport similar to horse racing in Egypt, Mongolia and even as far afield as Australia, was brought to the town by Clwyd 2020, the team that are fundraising as part of Clwyd’s year as the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society’s feature county.

Lowri Williams, Clwyd 2020 ambassador, said: “We knew that there had been camel racing in Bala and Anglesey in the past, so we wanted to bring it to Llangollen as it’s something different and has never been done here before.

Barbara Hughes, Clwyd 2020 Llangollen and Glyn Ceiriog committee chair said “Team Clwyd 2020 absolutely smashed it.

“The camel racing proved a hit with everyone gathering round to watch the races and see them in action.”

As well as entertainment provided by the camels, the family day had a farm animal area with a cow, calves, sheep and goat for children to see and touch.

Mrs Hughes added: “It was an amazing family day out. Seeing all the children taking part in the activities tug of war, falconry display and getting close to the animals was particularly good to see. We are getting great feedback via the Facebook page and website, with many calling for more similar events like these.”
