A COACH firm boss has praised one of his drivers for dealing calmly with a road rage stand-off with a car on a village busy road – after a video of the dispute went viral on social media.

The two motorists brought Burtonwood to a standstill by refusing to give way in a remarkable incident which was caught on camera.

Penny Lane was ground to a halt at around 3pm on Saturday, August 10, when a coach from St Helens-based LMTTravel and the car came head to head.

With vehicles parked up on both sides of the road, neither driver would back up to let the other through, leaving queuing motorists behind them frustrated.

The man behind the wheel of the gold Volkswagen, whose number plate reads 'Big Oaf', is heard bragging about his £40,000 car and telling the bus driver to "get a proper job" – before adding "bye bye licence".

The coach driver then asks what a proper job is, to which the other man replies "my job", before saying that he owns his own business.

The "businessman" then got his camera phone out and took a picture of the bearded coach driver who gave him both thumbs up.

Motorists were left stuck for around 15 minutes before the coach eventually reversed to let the car through.

The video, which featured on this website earlier in the week, has been a topic of huge debate among readers and the story was picked up by national news sites.

Bus firm LMTravel, meanwhile, has come out in support of their driver.

Lee Marsh, who owns LMTravel, said: "Our driver handled the situation brilliantly, we're really pleased with the way he dealt with it.

"He was professional despite the behaviour of the other driver.

"Common sense should tell you that the Volkswagen should have backed up and let the coach go.

"He has made himself look like a bit of a fool to be honest."
