Items stolen in the burglary in the early hours of Wednesday, August 7 included keys to two cars, house keys a jacket, an E-cigarette, a Pandora bracelet and a necklace of high "sentimental value".

David Hewitt, 22, was asleep in the house with girlfriend Ellie at the time of break-in.

"I heard a noise at around 4am in the morning and looked out the window and couldn't see anything," said David.

"I thought nothing of it and went back to bed.

"I came down at about 10am and couldn't find my house keys, they were my girlfriend's jacket."

When he was unable to find the jacket he went to check if they were in the car when he noticed the VW Beetle was missing.

The car has since been found on Cornwall Street at Parr Industrial Estate abandoned and officers recovered the vehicle for forensics.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that an investigation is ongoing following a burglary in Thatto Heath last week.

"At some time between 2am and 4am on Wednesday, August 7, entry was gained to a property on Dorothy Street and keys were stolen.

"A VW Beetle was stolen from the driveway and later recovered on Cornwall Street abandoned and with minor damage. It was recovered for forensic enquiries to be carried out.

"It is also suspected that a debit card stolen in the offence was used at a nearby service station, and CCTV enquiries are ongoing."
