THE Cricketers Arms has been named Merseyside's Pub of the Year by the Campaign for Real Ale.

Just weeks after being crowned the best real ale pub in St Helens, the Cricketers Arms on Peter Street beat off stiff competition from pubs right across Merseyside to once again be crowned the best in the county.

Landlord Andy Evans and wife and landlady Denise, were presented with a certificate by the CAMRA Merseyside co-ordinator Doug Macadam on Saturday, August 3. They also marked the event with a charity barbecue in their newly finished Pavilion Bar which at last count raised £160 for Mencap.

Andy said: "We are absolutely ecstatic with winning this title for the fifth yearand we want to thank the public for their support.

"We try each year to improve the pub, and are soon to launch our Howzat Brewaery on site, so hoping in the future we'll bring the national prize home again as well for us and the town."

The Cricketers is also in the running for the Regional Pub of the Year, results will be announced later this month.
