ST HELENS Council says it has launched legal action after travellers ignored an eviction notice ordering them to leave a site in Newton-le-Willows.
Residents had reported seeing around 15 caravans park up on the King George V Playing fields over the weekend.
On Monday, the council said it has been alerted to the situation and served a notice giving the travellers 24 hours to leave the site.
However, this has not happened with the council now taking the matter to the courts.
A council spokeswoman said: "We have now started legal proceedings and are awaiting a court date."
