TWO people have been taken to hospital following a car crash this afternoon, police say.

Pennington Lane has been closed following the incident near Penkford Lane, Newton-le-Willows.

Police have confirmed closures were put in place from 2.40pm and it is affecting traffic between Newton-le-Willows and St Helens.

Police officers, the fire service and ambulance were called to the scene of what emergency services say was a two-car crash between a a Ford Focus and Mini Cooper.

One of the vehicle ended up on its side on a field after the collision.

A spokesman said one person was "trapped" inside a vehicle and had to be cut out by fire and rescue officers.

St Helens Star:

 A fire service spokeswoman added: "On arrival, fire crews found two vehicles - one on its wheels and the second on its side in a field.

"The driver of the first vehicle and two people from the second were out of the vehicles.

St Helens Star:

"The three people are conscious and breathing and being treated on site by NWAS (North West Ambulance).

"They will be taken to hospital for further checks."
