PARENTS in St Helens who are receiving letters from their children’s schools asking for “stationary and paper” or who see them losing teaching assistants and teachers (Star, June 27) should note that the leading public schools across the country are classified as “charities” in law.
This means they receive substantial tax concessions, in effect, a subsidy from ordinary taxpayers.
Labour, under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, did not have the courage to tackle this abuse while it is clearly pointless to expect any action from the Tories whoever wins the leadership or, indeed, from the Brexit party.
In the 2017 general election the Tory manifesto proposed the removal of pensioners heating allowances while, next year, pensioners are set to lose their free TV licences, equivalent to a £3 a week reduction in their state pensions.
All part of the much vaunted “Brexit dividend”, no doubt!
