SIX new homes will be built on land surrounding the Sportsmans Arms pub in Penketh as the council gives the green light to the development.

The pub was saved three years ago from becoming a Netto supermarket following a campaign from Penketh residents who secured it as an asset of community value.

After the supermarket chain collapsed, the Warrington Road pub’s future was thrown into doubt once again.

Developers NewRiver submitted plans for six houses on land behind the pub - which will remain open on the site.

The five three-bed and one four-bed red brick homes will each have driveway parking and create a courtyard-style residential scheme.

This brings the total car parking spaces to 13 in addition to visitor parking.

The plans received six complaints from residents but most did not object to the development, rather the responsibility of large trees in a boundary between the gardens on Tavistock Road and the site.

A new pub garden will be created in addition to a new access road which will assist in separating the pub from the residential area.

One resident voiced concerns about noise levels from the pub and the proximity of the new development.

She said: "This is very close proximity to the pub and all of the noises associated with it.

"We have recordings of loud music being played at the pub at 8.45pm and our garden is some distance away.

"We regularly remove our young grandsons from our garden due to the language coming from the vicinity of the pub.

"We are also frequently woken at night by bottles being thrown into the bottle bank in the early hours.

"These problems are increased in summer due to windows being left open.

"As I stated we are some distance away and the noise is very loud and frequent, I pity whoever buys a house in this close a proximity to the pub."
