A NUMBER of cars have become submerged in water after flooding hit several areas of St Helens this week.

Roads at Peasley Cross, Merton Bank and Gerard's Bridge appear to be the worst affected.

Cars became stuck on College Street, Gerard's Bridge and at Peasley Cross Lane following the torrential rain that fell on Tuesday and overnight.

New flood barriers are in operation at Peasley Cross Lane, near to Saints' stadium, to prevent drivers going through the waters.

However, one car had already become trapped.

A council spokesperson said: "Peasley Cross Lane and College Street closed due to flooding. Please avoid the area and use alternative routes."

The closures have led to disruption for drivers during rush hour.
