When asked by the Star, United Utilities explained that they had been carrying out some "essential mains clearing" in the area overnight which can cause "discolouration".
A spokesperson said: “Overnight we carried out some essential mains cleaning in the WA9 Thatto Heath area of St Helens.
"On occasion work on the network can disturb naturally occurring sediment that sits on the bottom of some water mains, causing discolouration.
"It’s harmless but we acknowledge that visually it doesn’t look great and we’re sorry for any inconvenience. If a customer has any concerns they can contact us on 0345 672 3723.”
