The man, aged 32, was reportedly punched and kicked during the incident, which happened at 9pm on Sunday.
The offenders, described as being around 15 to 16 years old and wearing dark clothing, made off on foot.
One of the youths was wearing what has been described as a distinctive green jacket.
The man sustained a head injury and it is understood ambulance staff later attended his home address.
Detective Inspector Jackie Guinness said: “This was a shocking incident and it is only sheer good fortune that the victim’s injuries were not more serious.
“We believe the offenders made off from the scene in the direction of the bus station and would appeal to anyone who may have seen the group before, during or after the incident to get in touch.
“Any information on the incident or the offenders could prove vital in bringing them to justice.”
