THE Brexit Party topped the polls in St Helens as the results of the European Elections 2019 were declared.

The party, led by former UKIP leader Nigel Farage, recorded 13,763 votes in St Helens, pushing Labour into second place with 8,443.

The votes were counted on Sunday evening, in line with all other European Union members, following the ballot which took place on Thursday, May 23.

The Green Party and Liberal Democrats - both pro-Remain parties - recorded votes above 5,000, considerably higher than the Conservatives, which had 1,805 votes.

And despite the Brexit party heading the local vote, the St Helens North MP Conor McGinn said it was a mistake to think Labour's lost  votes had gone to the Brexit party.

He tweeted: "It's a mistake to think that Labour lost votes in leave seats in the north went exclusively or primarily to the Brexit party.

"In St Helens, pro-Remain/2nd referendum parties trebled their vote share and the majority of voters rejected a no-deal Brexit.

"That mustn't be ignored."

The turnout for St Helens borough was 28.59 per cent.
