A report was received just before 5.30pm that the boy had been approached by "a group of males on pedal bikes" near to the store.
It is understood they threatened to stab the boy as one of the group claimed to be in possession of a knife, although no weapon was seen during the incident.
No physical assault took place, say police.
Community Sergeant Amelia Barr said: "It is completely unacceptable to threaten and intimidate anyone in this way, and we are determined to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
"Everybody should be able to go about their daily lives without the fear that they are going to be targeted in this way.
"If you know who is responsible for this incident, please do the right thing and contact police."
