THE fire that broke out at the Colliers Arms on Monday was caused by a faulty freezer in the upstairs apartment, says the pub’s owner.

Messages of support have been pouring in for the Pimbo Road pub in Kings Moss since the blaze ravaged the upstairs at about 6.20pm on Monday.

Four fire engines – two from Merseyside and two from Lancashire – tackled the fire, as well as an aerial platform.

The owners of the pub, Andrew and Julie Markland, said the fire was caused by a faulty freezer upstairs which is less than two years old.

Andrew, 68, who lives in Northumberland, said: “The fire was started by a faulty domestic freezer in the kitchen of the flat above the pub.

“Staff were alerted when the fire alarm went off, and a member of the team went upstairs to check and saw a serious fire in the kitchen area.

“The pub was evacuated and we are very, very grateful that no one was hurt; stuff can be replaced.

“Therefore the pub will be closed until further notice. Despite the fact the fire didn’t affect downstairs, there is water damage from the fire service putting the fire out.”

Andrew said the managers of the pub will be overseeing the redecorating of the Colliers, including recarpeting and laying new floor.

He added: “We aren’t based in St Helens so we were very shocked when we saw what had happened. It is utterly shocking.

“Thank you to everyone who has offered their support. We will let everyone know when we are ready to reopen.”

The crews put out the blaze shortly after 8pm.

The Colliers, which has a strong reputation for the food its serves, posted a message on social media on Tuesday stating that it would be closed until further notice.

Dozens of people replied with messages of support: “So very sorry for what’s happened. Hope you come back stronger than ever.

“We’ll miss you and your fantastic food.”
