Police and ambulances were called at 2.40pm today after it was initially feared a man had been assaulted on Recreation Street, close to Parr Swimming and Fitness Centre.

Sirens could be heard across the town centre and the air ambulance landed on Nanny Goat Park, Fingerpost.

However, after attending the scene, paramedics believe the man's injuries had been caused by a fall, police and North West Ambulance Service confirmed.

It is believed that following the fall and after emergency crews were called three men became involved in a brawl, which led a to a large number of police being on the street.

A police spokesman said: "There is nothing consistent with initial reports that the man suffered an assault or stabbing.

"The man's injuries are not thought to be serious.

"Following reports of the man's injuries there was then a disturbance, reportedly a fight involving three men.

"Police have arrested three men on suspicion of affray."
