I READ with dismay of the council’s consultation on the proposed cuts to our street cleaning service and the reduction of the valuable street cleaning team.

I never drop litter and have brought my children up to do the same, but unfortunately in our throwaway society and some people’s attitude and disrespect to their environment, the street cleaning team are essential in keeping our town tidy.

I understand the crippling cuts in funding that the council has had to endure and whilst I am sympathetic I think this latest cut would be a drastic mistake.

Now having to pay a further 2.99 per cent on our council tax bill, I question whether just a small amount of this could be allocated to keep our town clean and tidy.

The cuts in our parks and gardens has already made a visible impact on the appearance of our town.

In contrast Wigan & Leigh and other neighbouring local authorities who share the same restraints have fantastic flower displays and colourful containers everywhere.

This creates an outward appearance of optimism and positivity.

We lack this and to now propose to expose ourselves to streets full of litter is a sad reflection on St Helens.

The recent publicity from the council of the plans for regeneration and redevelopment of St Helens are welcomed but you need to get the basics right first.

Who would want to invest in a town that looks scruffy and neglected and shows outward signs of deprivation?

Be forward thinking.
