A PLANNING application to build 91 homes at the site of the former Vulcan Works has been submitted.

The plans are for 'phase four' of the Vulcan Village project at the location of the former locomotive manufacturers.

St Modwen Homes have submitted the latest application to St Helens Council for the homes at Wargrave Road.

Proposals state the development would see a "comprehensive mix of unit types" ranging "from two bed houses to four bed houses to meet the needs of the local area".

They add the homes would be two to two-and-a-half storeys high.

Plans add: "We believe the proposal provides a coherent, legible layout design for 91 dwellings that will promote a sustainable, attractive and safe place to live, whilst respecting the character of the surrounding area and creating a vibrant community".

The Vulcan Works in Newton-le-Willows, opened in the 19th Century and was one of the biggest locomotive manufacturers and exporters in the world before its closure in 2002.

The land has now been turned into housing developments and sports clubs.
