THE true story of an English suffragette and socialist will be portrayed in two St Helens libraries this week.

The Hard Way: The Story of Hannah Mitchell is a one-woman show of storytelling with acoustic folk song, based on Hannah’s own autobiography, The Hard Way Up.

Acclaimed musician and storyteller Louise Jordan will deliver the performance as part of the Cultural Hubs, arts in libraries programme.

A self-taught, self-made woman, Hannah left home aged 14, exchanging one exploitative situation for another.

During her life, she fought for gender equality, met Winston Churchill and spent time in Strangeways prison.

This show celebrates her determination to take on power in the face of insurmountable barriers, motivated by a desire to improve life for those around her.

The Hard Way will be staged on Thursday, March 28 at Peter Street Library (2pm), or Billinge Library (7pm).

The performance is audio described, and is suitable for adults and teens aged 14 plus.

Tickets cost £6, £5 (St Helens Library card holders), or £3 (concessions). Book online at www.culturalhubs.eventbrite.co.uk or visit any St Helens library to purchase tickets.

Cultural Hubs is funded by Arts Council England and delivered by St Helens Council’s Library Service.
