TRAINS running to and from Liverpool Lime Street are being cancelled or delayed until 7.30pm.

The cause is a system failure at Edge Hill station which is disrupting trains heading to or from Liverpool Lime Street station.

National Rail Enquiries, said in a statement: "Lines have now reopened following a fault with the signalling system at Edge Hill.

"Although trains are now back on the move, major disruption is expected to journeys to and from Liverpool Lime Street.

"Trains may be cancelled, revised or delayed by up to 60 minutes.

"This is expected until 19:00.

"Please note, this disruption is not affecting Merseyrail services."

Northern, which operates most trains into and out of the station, announced that due to an error with the signalling system at the station "no trains are able to run in or out of Liverpool Lime Street".

They said via a statement: "Services are able to go as far as Huyton or Hunts Cross on routes into Liverpool.

"Road replacement vehicles have been sourced and further details on these will follow."
