The M6 has been shut northbound following a crash involving at least six vehicles.
Emergency services were called to the scene near Crewe just before 12.30pm on Monday.
The northbound carriageway is now closed between junction 16 for Stoke-on-Trent/Crewe and junction 17 for Sandbach/Crewe.
Police say it will remain shut for the 'next couple of hours'.
It is believed two lorries and a number of cars were involved in the collision.
Fuel has spilled onto the motorway and work is now underway to clear it up.
North West Motorway Police tweeted: "Multi vehicle RTC. Due to the diesel spillage the carriageway will need treating before we can open it as it is not safe for us to allow traffic to pass. It is anticipated it will remain closed for the next couple of hours. Please find an alternative route."
