MERSEYSIDE Fire and Rescue Service is recruiting trainee firefighters.

The service announced today that it has opened applications for trainee wholetime firefighters to join recruit courses in 2019 and 2020.

A trainee salary is £22,908 per year, however, following training and subsequent development this can rise to £30,533.

A statement on the service's website said: "The role of a Merseyside Firefighter is to save and preserve endangered life by supporting and maintaining an emergency response service to the community.

"Instances where Firefighters are called upon to make life-saving decisions include the distinguishing of all fire related incidents, responding to requests for emergency medical care and rescuing people from what can be distressing situations.

"As well as providing this crucial service, Merseyside Firefighters assist in the delivery of prevention activities to the most vulnerable people in our region to keep them safe and well.

"We are looking for people with the right skills and experience who are just as passionate as we are in working to make the communities of Merseyside safer and stronger.

"Hours: 48 positive hours plus 48 hours retained – usually compressed across 4 days to leave 4 days free from work in every 8 day period (42 hours positive per week.)

"The retained element of the contract currently requires firefighters to respond into their station within 30 minutes."

The closing date for applications is midnight on February 27, 2019, although the service states that it may end the process sooner if it receive a sufficient amount of applicants.
