Denis Whittle, the Star’s former Saints correspondent
THE funeral of much-loved former St Helens Star rugby league writer Denis Whittle will take place at Lowe House Church at noon on Monday, January 28.
As reported in last week’s Star, Denis passed away on Friday, January 4 at the age of 85.
Tributes have flowed to Denis, who was widely known across the borough.
After previously working in production at the St Helens Reporter, he joined the Star as a reporter in 1989 and covered Saints until July 2001, dealing with coaches such as Mike McLennan, Eric Hughes, Shaun McRae, Ellery Hanley and Ian Millward.
The wearing of black at the service is optional, with the family saying Denis would have liked people to wear some red to celebrate his lifelong association with Saints.
