BOTH St Helens MPs voted against Theresa May's Withdrawal Agreement in last night's crunch House of Commons vote.

The Prime Minister suffered a huge defeat in Parliament as her Withdrawal Agreement on leaving the EU lost by 202 votes to 432.

This is the largest defeat a government motion has suffered in history recorded by Hansard.

St Helens North MP Conor McGinn and St Helens South and Whiston MP Marie Rimmer both voted against the withdrawal deal.

In a video released shortly before last night's vote, Mr McGinn said: "I want to thank the hundreds of people in St Helens North who have given me their views on Theresa May's Brexit deal that is being voted on in Parliament.

"The overwhelming number of responses asked me to vote against the deal because, like me, the people of St Helens North have come to the conclusion that this is a bad deal for our borough, for our communities, for Merseyside, for the North West and indeed the whole country.

"I will be voting against this deal tonight."

The Labour MP added: "Theresa May needs to come up with an alternative. I support Labour's six tests for any future deal. I have come to the conclusion that we need a General Election. That's what we should have and if we can't get that, we need a second referendum."

Ms Rimmer said on social media last week: "Theresa May’s deal is a bad deal and Labour will vote against it.

"If the government can’t pass its most important legislation then it’s no government at all. Labour is ready to govern."
